Dulci and I are pleased to launch the inaugural WnD Screenplay competition. For those that listen to our show, we discussed the concept on last week's show. The idea is quite simple. I want to produce a movie but can't write a screenplay to save my life. As such our APE (Audience Participation event) will be a contest that runs from now until February 14th.

The goal for contestants, is to write a screenplay (minimum 5 minutes in duration) that follows the theme of the video news broadcast posted below. So in essence, the news broadcast is meant to \"set the stage\" for the screenplay. The actual story can be anything surrounding this broadcast i.e. events leading up to it, events during it or after it. Comedic, dramtaic, romantic, action, thriller, horror - all types are acepted. The only caveat is that the screenwriter must iclude a female lead role for Dulci to play. Other than that, it's fun and frivolity time.

Winning entry (as determined by Dulci, myself and a handful of other judges) will be produced in an iclone movie as well the writer will receive the equivalent of $100 USD worth of my iclone content. We look forward to everyone's participation. Enjoy the broadcast! - Wolf

The following two pieces by Wolf led to our discussion of how versatile iClone 4 is, and how much can be accomplished without using any post production software.

This was a quick set test of alpha channel video, detailed texturing, mapping and lighting in iclone. Random items, no purpose other than to test combinations.

An exceptional example of what can accomplished with no post work outside of iClone is Stuckon3d's recent Turkey Dance:

We also recommended two movies by Biggstrek. One being his mysterious Pong video and the other his 15-second Star Wars clip.

I did my best to fulfill my promise to our loyal listener's last week, but I found Wolf's recently released sci fi pack user friendly. The only complaint I have is that it doesn't come up with a magic pill for scriptwriting inspiration!

After a special new theme song by themonk, we started off the show discussing the 48 hour machinima event and the controversy around iClone not being accepted as an acceptable platform for submissions (read more about that here and here). However, since the show the issue has been resolved, with a very gracious response from Chantal Harvey clearing up the matter & indicating that iClone will be accepted next year.

Ricky Grove, Phil Rice, and Damien (DarthAngelus) joined us to discuss the Machinima Expo in Second Life, as well as machinima at large and specifically for our audience, how iClone fits in to the Machinima community.

After about 20 minutes of Wolf mocking me, we moved into the heavy content with our special guest Stuckon3D. Cris held his first introductory class to iClone4 earlier today. Below is some information regarding Cris and his iClone classes. Wolf & Cris also went into specifics regarding the new lighting options in iClone4 - both HDR and IBL.

This is the first of many classes I will be teaching depending on the demand for it. While the future classes are not going to be free, they will be priced so that everyone can afford them. $35 per person. Lessons will be one to two hour classes plus 30 minutes for Q&A session. The classes will also be project based so by the end of the class you will see a mini project from start to end.

Topic I will be covering in my classes are:

1) Intro to Iclone4 (Learn the XYZ's to navigate iclone like a pro) (FREE ALWAYS!)
2) Intro to modeling in IC4 using primitives (it includes simple texturing techniques as well)
3) Advanced modeling for creating custom props (using sketchup and 3d exchange)
4) Intro to texturing in IC4 (learn what the different types of textures are for, what UVs are and how you can use them to your advantage)
5) Advance texturing in IC4 (learn how to combine all the texturing types and shaders to create realistic materials for your scenes)
6) Intro to lighting and shadows (Learn how to light to tell your story)
7) Advanced Lighting (Learn how to combine IBL with HDRI and tone mapping to get the best lighting scenarios possible out of iclone)
8) Intro to animation in IC4 (Learn keyframing and path animation to create fantastic flying logos and more!)
9) Advanced Animation ( learn to control your character using motion files and poses using the motion layer editor)
10) Effects in IC4 ( learn how to use particles, flex meshes, dynamic props, etc)

Detail breakdowns for each class will be available when the classes are offered. Also remember that while you dont have to take them all I would strongly recommend it,specially if you are a beginner, but of course you can also take only the ones you are interested in.

Teaching method:
While anyone can become a master of all RL softwares/tools with enough practice, not everyone is classified as an artist because they mastered them. And that is what Iclone is, a tool, a tool to help you express your visions.
In my classes, im not just going to tell how to use the tools, but how you can apply it in an artist way to help you unleash your visions. I will also teach some basic principles, for example:

1) In modeling, i will teach you to push a model to its limit without making it heavy. I will show you what can be done texturally without having to model it.
2) In texturing, I will show you how different material behave in real life and show you how to recreate them in the Iclone world.
3) In lighting, I will teach the basic principles and them show you how to translate that with Iclone lights, IBL,HDRI, and tone mapping.

Well I think you get the point by now. I'm going to teach iclone from an artist point of view, because anyone can teach you that 2+2=4, but an artist can also show you how if you turn a four upsidedown you can use it as a chair in iclone '-l l-,

The introduction class will always be free and I will be giving it once a month depending on how many people sign up. The seats are limited, 15 total, so sign up! I'm a 3d artist with 20 years plus experience.
I have worked on two major TV series ("Star Trek : Voyager" and "Deep Space nine"). Also worked for Disney, Nickelodeon, and Electronic Arts as a senior artist and an Art Director. I've also done movie trailers and music videos, as well as worked on six animated feature films. So if you ask yourself, does this guy have any experience? Did you catch the promo video Wolf made this week? I appreciate all the viewers who vouch for my innocence!

Several interesting movies were released last week, and we discussed a few of them during the show. Of special note was TheBiz's House of Horror:

Also discussed were my recent bit of craziness - PlayLand Episode 1 (featuring a special Jimmy Toon textured by Wolf), two movies by Chrisproductions - The Dead Again and The Change. As we talked about The Change, Wolf shared with us a few tips on how to make a face transition in iClone. We also looked at the delightful piece by WarLord - Wulf-B-Gone.

We talked about how much the fun the iClone Jimmy Toon character is to play with, along with a reminder from Wolf on how easy it can be to retexture him.

From some of our listeners that don't have 3D exchange, a special request was made for Jimmy Toon props of a different variety than some items currently on the market, but still maintaining the cartoon vibe. As a result we're showcasing Sketchup Designer Ian West and some of his cartoon style buildings. We've converted these props from Sketchup to iclone and are giving them away as one of tonight's Freebies on the show. Thank You Ian. These are top notch.

We finally settled on a name for our not-contests-participation-fun. After an unusual discussion, we decided to henceforth call these APE's - Audience Participation Events.

In the first official Wolf & Dulci Hour APE extravaganza, we are inviting you to make an Awwwww Shucks! movie.

The only criteria are that the movie includes both the Wolf & Dulci iWallE character and Jimmy Toon.

The judges will be Wolf's two daughters (6 and 8 yrs old) and my son (5 yrs old). Based on their strict standards, the movie that provides the biggest Awwww Shucks! moments will win.

The winner will receive a custom Jimmy Toon character designed by Wolf.

We hope to see some fun videos in this event and look forward to seeing the cute & cuddly side of all of you.

The One Where the iClone 4 Preview Knocks Our Socks Off

Where to even begin on this week's show?

Wolf & I had the pleasure (vast understatement!) of joining the Reallusion group at Siggraph in New Orleans this week. The 3 hour demo of iClone4 left us with our jaws on the floor. Immediately after the demo, Wolf & I hurried to get on the air and share what we saw with you. Joining us from the beginning of the show were fellow iCloners Rainman (of www.coolclones.com) and Lizard (of www.tmunderground.com) who also sat in on the demo. The preview that we saw will be available soon through the Reallusion site - keep checking the page here for that.

I wish I had Rainman, Lizard, and Wolf sitting here right now as I type this, as trying to recap what we discussed in our 2.5 hour show is nearly impossible! We review the extremely exciting features iClone4 will incorporate - among them, massive changes to lighting options (can anyone say HDR and IBL?), the incorporation of video into iClone projects (believe me, this will BLOW YOUR MIND when you find out these details), facial pupeteering (similiar to CrazyTalk features but used directly within iClone - and your characters don't have to be talking to show expressions!), motion paths (including automatic terrain navigation!!), Drag & Drop (drag an image directly from a folder into an iClone project and viola - instant results!), facial feature updates (deformation and randomization), exciting updates to Director mode (no need to memorize those hot keys anymore), updates to particle effects options (think smoothing and more realism) - I know I'm not remembering everything as I sit here frantically typing, but that's why this is the show you don't want to miss.

We also had the pleasure of discussing iClone 4 live on the air with members of the Reallusion team - John Martin, James Martin, and CloneBot Zack. I can't say enough about the graciousness, enthusiasm, and warmth of the entire Reallusion group - they made us feel welcome and that we are part of the iClone family. I don't know who is more excited about using iClone - those of us who buy it or the people behind the scenes designing it! Charles Chen was an outstanding host and I sincerely feel that with him behind the wheel, we're going to continue to see amazing advancements with iClone.

I don't think it's any secret that I've enjoyed creating with iClone 3. iClone 4 though - woah. I can't imagine leaving my computer for at least a month after it's available and I have it installed. I cannot wait to see what people achieve once they have this software in their hands. The ease of use, the simplification of some already existing features, the very minimal learning curve of incorporating the new features - all combine to make this one of the most exciting updates to the machinima community. The video incorporation alone is going to make this an easy tool to use to combine various engines together.

We are thrilled that Reallusion's very own John Martin II agreed to come on the air with us to discuss his latest release, For the love of Sprog! The movie can be viewed here.

Listen to the two masterminds (probably the one & only time I'll put that in writing about Wolf!) discuss iClone. Although some might argue that John had a momentary loss of sanity by agreeing to join us, we really enjoyed the opportunity to chat with him.
